I always thought the Michelin star biz to be a rich people propaganda move. I get that a restaurant deserves some recognition to distinguish it from others – fair enough. But 2 stars? I mean, what on earth can you bring more on my plate that would make you a 2 star?! Apparently… a lot!
Now I can’t even be picky on this one because everything was just brilliant! The place is amazing (I was in the Library room by the way) and deserves at least a visit.
Yes, you will probably feel underdressed. And yes, you might get all self-conscious that all the sudden you realise you kinda suck in restaurant etiquette rules! (guilty!)
Well.. first, you shouldn’t care! You’re a paying customer after all. Right? And second, even if you care it doesn’t really matters. The staff in Sketch is so nice, polite and humble that they treat you as a star! No wait, two stars! (even if you go for the tap water and you’re obviously there because of a voucher.. guilty again!)In London don't eat more expensive... eat smart! Click To Tweet
In London don’t eat more expensive, eat smart! Keep an eye on London’s food venue’s social media channels. Twitter, Facebook or whatever network – just follow them where they are! I do NOT have the sort of money to be spending on Michelin star restaurants… but you stumble upon discounts quite often. Because the amount of food offer in London is so big, the chances a good restaurant makes a promotion is quite high.
Sketch is a great example – they have an occasional Facebook promotion that allows you to enjoy all the 2-star goodness at a lunch time for a better price.
The treatment you get in Sketch by itself would be enough to forgive any food mistake about to happen. But that just doesn’t happen. From the very first dish until the last the food never disappoints.
Yes off course that everyone has a personal taste but the point is that on the whole, the menu has a harmony and fits pretty well together.
Now into the star dishes of the day! Who would thought you could elevate codfish to a level that high in both presentation and flavour. I’m Portuguese ladies & gentlemen! We are quite famous for our cod recipes.. there’s even a book which has “a thousand recipes for codfish”. Poached in olive oil and surrounded by a super soft cream, I’d say Sketch codfish is a great competitor for all of them.
Obviously, we had to order and try one of each menu items so we got to taste amazing things such as Veal and a beautiful Mackerel. What still strikes me on these high-quality places is how they are able to elevate the flavour of simple things such as potatoes, leak or hummus.
The desserts just kept the tone of the great meal. While typically you have one option and the risks of not liking the flavour, a 2 star knows better. They offer a parade of small sweet goodness dishes instead!
We had a meringue with chocolate, a mango and lime sorbet on a biscuit and a delicious camembert mousse with Campari flavoured beetroots and pear ice cream. (Ok, Just a quick side note. I’m not a food freak critic that know all these fancy ingredients! I just take a picture of the menu so I can know what I’m eating and replicate the name. Yes still a normal guy here that purely enjoys food, food talk, food culture… well you know where this goes!)
Anyway, Sketch sort of ruined my blog theory of finding the star dish of the place because I really had a hard time with this one to single out a dish. On the positive side, this is as green as my light can go… just visit the place! How often do you get to select anything blindly and have an amazing experience!
Honestly, I haven’t even mentioned the small treats that go together between these dishes.
PS: I’ve heard the afternoon tea here is also quite amazing. Is anyone familiar with this? Any tips would be highly appreciated.
